Drought in California is a familiar reality across the country.

Us as citizens, can help ensure that this drought does not cause more damage, while receiving a government rebate for helping to care for our planet Earth.

Your project to replace the lawn should have the following:


Three low-watered plants per 100 square feet of transformed lawn.


A rainwater catchment device that helps to reserve water in your garden when it rains. Stone gardens and rain-collecting barrels are some of the sustainable gardening approaches you can take.


Permeable hard landscapes that allow water to circulate through the surface and slowly filter to the ground.


Replacement or modification of aerial sprinklers by a more efficient irrigation system in water use.

The request

It has two parts that are completed on the official refund website:


1. Approval to start the project

Book a refund before starting your garden project or removing the lawn. In this case, you will calculate the estimated amount of the refund according to the area and type of project.

2. Reimbursement Request

After your project plans are approved, you will have 180 days to transform the lawn and submit the request for a refund.



Receive $2 or more for each square foot of lawn converted into your garden (either front or back of your home), up to a limit of 5,000 square feet.


Your water provider may offer you an additional refund incentive.


You may be eligible for additional reimbursement if you use devices such as weather-based irrigation controllers, soil moisture sensors, rotating nozzles, rain collecting barrels, or cisterns.

A saving technique: Xeriscaping.


You can get a higher refund if you use more economical irrigation controllers and avoid installing abundant irrigation controllers.

Xeriscaping, is a saving technique that has been implemented in recent years related to water saving. It has the potential to reduce water use and maintenance, improve biodiversity, reduce pollution and mitigate heat within urban areas.

The vegetation used for urban green spaces, is native to the area. Therefore, they are less expensive and require less assistance to acclimatize and survive in the environment compared to imported vegetation.

Basically, it is a different technique from landscaping, it is aimed at highlighting the natural beauty of a garden with plants from that soil, which makes it require less water and less fertilizer, this according to the land that is predisposed to feed that plant.
